Estimation of fractional nitric oxide (NO) concentration in the exhaled breath (FENO) is a quantitative and simple method of evaluating airway inflammation.
FENO gives the following information:
FENO < 25 ppb (20 ppb in children) is likely to be normal, values > 50 ppb (35 ppb in children) indicates likelihood of eosinophilia inflammation corticosteroid responsiveness. Values > 25 ppb < 50 ppb (20–35 ppb in children) should be interpreted as per the clinical setting.
