A sleep study also called as a polysomnogram, is a test that is used to diagnose sleep related disorders. It is an overnight study in which various parameters are recorded while the child is sleeping
Why is this study performed?
This study is performed when the child has a disturbed sleep and complains of any of the following symptoms:
Daytime study could also be performed to diagnose narcolepsy and hypersomnia.
How is the sleep study performed?
The sleep technician will do the following: Sensors are placed at various areas, such as on the head, chin, and legs, and around the eyes An elastic belt is placed around the child’s chest and stomach to measure breathing The different sensors are connected to a computer to provide information during sleep A microphone is placed near the child’s nose to record snoring if present The baby is monitored for the entire duration of the sleep study in an adjacent room by a technician via a camera.
During a sleep study the following parameters are monitored and recorded:
The technician can disconnect the sensors and other devices in case the child needs to use the bathroom during the night.
One parent or guardian can stay overnight with the child during the duration of the study.
How long does it take for the study?
It is an overnight study.
